Last year, UNESCO conferred upon our dear island the honor of being included in its Global Geopark Network, making it the first destination ever to receive this distinction in the entire Philippines.
This marked the culmination of a journey that began decades ago when a group of researchers and visionaries came to Bohol. Recognizing the island’s potential for tourism sustainability, they initiated activities in collaboration with our local tourism industry players.
With their guidance and support, these initiatives bore much fruit, leading to our cooperating tourism players receiving key sustainability awards on both local and international fronts.
This success inspired Boholanos to pursue the application for Bohol as a UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK.
Today, Bohol joins ITB Berlin as part of our promotion campaign, aiming not only for national but also international recognition as Bohol Island Geopark, the Philippines’ only UNESCO Global Geopark.
