Loon

Located on the western coast of Bohol is the municipality of Loon. It is said to have been named after a beautiful seaside spring located in the northern part of the Poblacion. However, there is no record to prove this as a fact. It is not definitely known when the town was established but in 1879, it was already a flourishing community with a population of 7,202.

Visit Our Lady of Light Parish Church

The Nuestra Señora de la Luz Parish Church (also Our Lady of Light Parish Church), commonly known as Loon Church. The parish was established by the Jesuits in 1753 and the original stone church was built from 1855 to 1864. It was declared as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

The entire church building and convent were destroyed by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which struck Bohol and other parts of Central Visayas on October 15, 2013. Loon Church completed its restoration on September 7, 2021. The National Historic Commission successfully turned over the church to the Diocese of Tagbilaran after an eight-year restoration period.

Visit the Loon Uplifted Marine Terrace (Coral Garden)

One of the shoreline areas uplifted during the earthquake of October 15, 2013 is the presently named Loon Coastal Geomorphic Conservation Park which covers an area of 417 hectares. This former intertidal zone, where the tide sometimes submerged or exposed the land, is now an uplifted terrace and completely on dry land. It was raised approximately 1.5 meters vertically and the shoreline shifted 50 meters seawards. The former barren land right after the earthquake is now teeming with sea purslane, a creeping succulent seagrass plant of the family Aizoaceae, that covers the land with a mat of red and orange color during sunny days, and a luxurious green color during rainy days. The locals call the area the Coral Garden, a popular new destination for tourists and residents alike.

Cabilao Island is an island of Loon which lies on the West of the main island of Bohol, facing Cebu Island. One of its best attractions is the Lake Lanao, Bohol’s only natural lake found at the heart of the island, which is frequently visited by migratory birds. The island is also visited by tourists because of its best dive sites where they can enjoy diving on some of the wonderful reefs that surround the island. Cabilao is also famous of its shoal of hammerhead sharks.
