Bohol’s participation in the 35th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM), held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City from September 6 to 8, 2024, represented another significant step forward in the province’s ongoing efforts to promote its tourism offerings and commitment to sustainable practices. This annual festival provided an important opportunity for Bohol to highlight its distinctive features, local products, and its designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark—the first and only one in the Philippines.

Emphasis on Sustainable Tourism

Bohol’s booth at the PTM represented the province’s strategic focus on sustainable tourism, a crucial project spearheaded by Governor Erico Aristotle “Aris” Aumentado. The exhibit emphasized eco-friendly practices while also highlighting Bohol’s rich cultural legacy and natural attractions, such as the famous Chocolate Hills and the gorgeous Loboc River. Attendees experienced local crafts and items made from sustainable resources, which reinforced Bohol’s commitment to environmental protection.

Joanne Pinat, head of the Bohol Provincial Tourism Office, said participation in travel fairs such as the PTM is essential to the province’s overall sustainable tourism strategy. This year, Bohol highlighted local companies and tourism providers, giving visitors a taste of the different experiences available in the province.

Boosting Tourist Arrivals

Bohol’s involvement in the PTM was crucial for enhancing tourist arrivals. In the first half of 2023, the province reported an impressive 114.12% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the same period the previous year. Governor Aumentado set ambitious targets to exceed one million tourist arrivals by the end of 2024, leveraging marketing and promotional efforts through events like the PTM to achieve this goal.

The provincial government recognized that increased tourism translates into significant economic benefits for local communities. In 2022, Bohol’s tourism sector generated approximately P7.3 billion in revenue, with projections for 2023 indicating continued growth.

Collaborative Efforts

The Bohol delegation to the PTM included local government officials, tourism stakeholders, and representatives from various resorts and travel agencies—a unified front in promoting Bohol as a premier travel destination. Notable exhibitors included renowned resorts such as Amorita Resort, Bohol Beach Club, and Mithi Resort and Spa, alongside local artisans showcasing their crafts.

As Bohol participated in the 35th Philippine Travel Mart, the province’s unwavering commitment to sustainable tourism, economic growth, and collaborative initiatives placed it at the forefront of the Philippine tourist sector. By taking part in this landmark event, Bohol not only showcased its unique features but also demonstrated its dedication to preserving its natural and cultural heritage for future generations. The PTM served as a vital platform for Bohol to communicate with potential visitors and stakeholders, ensuring that the province remains a top choice for travelers looking for authentic and sustainable experiences.
